What BU Honor Student Is About: Trying to Pay Off Student Loans

Hi! My name is Kalee Sorey, and I am a 20-year-old marketing major at Belmont University. Belmont’s Massey College of Business is one of the best programs in the nation and I cannot see myself anywhere else. The $12,000 tuition, however, never rests easy on me regardless of how close I am to graduating.

I have grown up in a humble, middle-class family; my dad is a small business owner and my mom is a math teacher. A trip to the grocery store, mall, or restaurant ALWAYS involved a coupon and often times a piggy bank with all of our spare change. Therefore, I don’t know what $46,000 (the approximate amount of my student loans) looks like or how I will ever begin to pay it back 6-months after graduation. I know my situation is not uncommon, but my method to overcome it is truly unique– I will share my life in coupons and offer advertisements, auctions, and services to pay off my debt.

News 2 at 5

Hey everyone! I am sure if you’ve been following me on Twitter or Facebook you already know, but News 2 was kind enough to do a story on BU Honor Student. I was so excited and cannot thank them (especially Jamey Tucker) enough for their support. If you missed the interview you can read about it here.

Thanks again for everyone’s continued support. You all make my day, and I continually get a little thrill out of seeing how many people visit the site. :)

How to Shop Online

While online shopping allows you to buy a big screen TV from your warm couch while watching Big Bang Theory in your pajamas, it can actually be cheaper than venturing out to the store. Use these tools and start saving today!

Finding Your Product

  • Google Shopping — If you know the name of the item you are wanting to buy, Google Shopping will allow you to compare prices all over the web instantly. It is also faster and more accurate than many competitor sites such as Pricezilla and Pricegrabber.
  • Ebay – Score great deals on new and used products on eBay. It is best to bid with a price limit set with only minutes of the auction ending. This helps you score the best price, not overbid in the excitement of the auction, and beat other competing bidders. Also, be sure to check the seller’s feedback. You want to aim for 95%+ positive feedback. Lucky Brand Jeans Belts are as low as $10, BCBG as low as $3, and Abercrombie & Fitch tops for .99 and so on. Makeup, DVDS, and coupons are also on eBay for cheap!

So you’ve found a good deal…make it even better with cash back, coupons, and discounts!

  • Shop At Home, Ebates, & BingEach of these sites offer cash back, as well as, a $5 reward for signing up. In order to get the most money back, you should register at all 3 companies and compare the cash back percentages to the store. Example: Ebates gives you 4% at Sephora, while Shop At Home gives you 8%!
  • Retail Me Not-- Retail Me Not offers 100s of coupon codes in a easy, simple way. You just type in the store’s website and a list of coupon codes will pop up along with a success rate and user comments about the coupon.
  • AAA Member Discounts – Get 15% off NFL.com and Kohls online! Target and Barnes and Noble also offer 10% everyday. If you are paying for AAA, make sure to utilize these discounts to get the most for your money!
  • E-Clubs If you shop one store in particular often, check to see if the site offers email notifications. These notifications will keep you informed on promotions such as FREE shipping and new markdowns.

Stay on the couch, order some Chinese, and save some cash on your future purchases!

Before you head out to save money, don’t forget to learn about BU Honor Student and my proactive approach to my student loans.

Using Twitter to Get Coupons, Samples, and Freebies!

Hey everyone! I never thought I would be a Twitter fan, but after I have winning a radio contest, saving $86 dollars, and getting 2 free meal bars in 2 weeks, I am a changed woman.

I can’t honestly say I am using the site for social reasons or seeing huge marketing results, but I have added the application to my phone and check the site once a day for freebies. While the lingo (@kaleesorey, RT, #subject things, etc) still confuses me, I am becoming a pro at getting stuff from my Twitter account. I started off following celebrities–boring! Now, I follow the thrifty, the frugal, and the free.

I’m not saying everyone will have a great experience or become rich from “Tweeting,” but the ability to get some good coupons is there. Currently my favorite Tweet-ers are: TheThriftyMama, GroceryShopFree, FrugalinVA, and thecoupondiva. All of these women are excellent shoppers and tell you daily deals. It’s wonderful! I got $30 worth of groceries for $2! $90 of makeup for $5! This week it’s Hasbro games for .60!

Also, I follow local radio stations. I won a contest by following a DJ (Ryno, You rock!) . The prize was 5th row Paramore tickets (AND Taylor Swift showed up in the crowd)!! It was very exciting. :) Thanks Twitter and 107.5 the River!

Okay, I have went on about my new fascination long enough. I also feel the need to warn everyone: do NOT give your information out to unprotected sites! I know, the Jennifer Lopez perfume sample is SO tempting, but it could be a way to get your personal information. The deals on Twitter aren’t all surveys thank goodness. There are many printable coupons, online discount codes, and rebates to be had–choose wisely and save money! :)

Get Fit without the Gym! Jillian Michaels, Carmen Electra, Excerise TV for FREE

If you’re like me, you’ve been avoiding the scale for days. Instead of making excuses (my clothes are at least 4 pounds or it’s because I just ate), I am taking charge and getting back to being healthy! I have 8 pounds to loose to be back to pre-thanksgiving weight; anyone else have a similar goal? Let me know what you’re doing to meet it, and I’ll share what I am doing as well!

Diet Deals
I love Joy Bauer’s The 90/10 Weight-Loss Plan because it is a well-balanced diet and comes with a 2-week eating plan for 3 different calorie intakes (1200, 1400, 1600). It also offers a brief insight into how and why the plan works. Another plus is the foods in the eating plan are not very expensive — making it perfect for college students or thrifty mommas. I read nutrition and fitness books in my spare time, and this one is the best for a busy person that I have found. She is a writer for Self Magazine and has been seen on The View and The Today Show as well.

Get the book at TextbookX.com for $1.15 used! Log into Shop At Home before you buy, type in TextbookX.com and get 3.5% cash back too!

Excerise Deals

  • If you have Comcast On Demand (I have basic cable from Comcast and get it), you have access to 100s of full-length fitness dvds for free!

Go to Channel 1 Comcast On Demand:” Click Sports & Fitness” on the right hand side of the menu: Click “Excerise TV”

Enjoy the free workouts varying from Carmen Electra’s sexy toning moves to Jillian Michaels butt-kicking workouts!

  • Fit TV Also, if you have a more extensive cable plan you may also get Fit TV which has tons of workouts playing daily. I don’t get the channel, but they offer yoga and Cathe Friedriche workouts (she’s amazing).
  • Ebay.com You can find good deals on eBay for used exercise DVDs, but if you have a VCR you can find exercise VHS tapes for less than a dollar! Use Shop At Home and save 2% with every purchase too!
  • Netflix.com allows you to rent exercise DVDs with plans starting at 9.99 a month. It’s a little more money but still can’t compare to the cost of a gym membership!
